Ireland's Brendan Irvine had to settle for silver in the European Games as he went down in the final to Bator Sagaluev of the Ukraine.

Sagaluev showed his intentions early on as he attacked aggressively and while Irvine defended with his long left arm, Sagaluev landed a couple of jabs to give him the incentive early on.

The Ukraine man was full of energy but Irvine stayed calm and landed a couple of jabs of his own as the first round came to a close but it was Sagaluev who took the first 10-9, 10-9, 10-9.

The second round started at a ferocious pace with both boxers going hard at it. Sagaluev ended up on the canvas during one exchange but it was more down to a slip but Irvine kept attacking to cause Sagaluev problems of his own.

The Irishman grew in confidence but Sagaluev was still full of energy and took a close second round 10-9, 10-9, 9-10.

Irvine took the third round 10-9, 10-9, 10-9 but the Irishman had to settle for silver as Sagaluev won on a split decision.
