Stephen Maguire came from behind to knock out home favourite Mark Williams and set up a Welsh Open semi-final against Mark Selby.
Glaswegian Maguire trailed 3-2 in yesterday afternoon's best-of-nine quarter-final before fighting back to win 5-3 against in-form Williams.
Maguire, who turns 30 next month, has yet to reach a Welsh Open final, but his next opponent is a former champion -- Selby beat Ronnie O'Sullivan in 2008 for his first and thus far only ranking tournament victory.
Selby will be looking to reach another final after knocking out World Championship runner-up Graeme Dott yesterday.
The Leicester potter ensured it would not be an all-Scottish semi-final by seeing off Dott 5-3.
Alberto Contador has put himself in position to win his third straight Tour of the Algarve after finishing yesterday's third stage in third place.
Stephen Cummings of Team Sky won the mountainous 179.2km (111.3 mile) leg in four hours, 56 minutes, 19 seconds -- the same time as Contador and second-placed finisher Tejay van Garderen of HTC-Highroad.
The Tour de France champion moved into second in the overall standings, six seconds behind Cummings.
Contador is racing for the first time since escaping a doping ban for testing positive for banned substance clenbuterol at last year's Tour.
The Spanish cycling federation accepted Contador's claim of a positive test stemming from him unintentionally eating contaminated meat.
WATERFORD'S De La Salle are Umbro FAI Schools Senior Boys Munster champions after inflicting a third straight final defeat on Cashel Community School in yesterday's final.
The Tipperary school were unable to stop a repeat of their 2003 and '06 decider defeats, as they slumped to a 3-1 loss.
Conor Coad opened the scoring for De La Salle inside 20 minutes. Cashel drew level on the half-hour mark through Paddy Fitzgerald.
De La Salle re-established their lead within five minutes as Aaron Gallibert's cross from the left was knocked home by Kevin Flynn, and Conor Whittle put his side into the comfort zone early in the second period when he rounded the 'keeper, before poking into an empty net.
