In brief: Doolin's U-19s face stiff test


PAUL DOOLIN's Ireland U-19s face an uphill battle to qualify for the European Championship after being drawn in a tough group alongside Italy, Ukraine and Poland in the elite phase of the qualifiers.

The matches will be held in Poland in either April or May next year, when Doolin's charges must top the group to earn a place in finals in Romania next June. The U-17s will face Denmark, Latvia and hosts Greece for in their elite qualifiers from March 23-28. Again, one team will progress to the finals in Serbia next May.


New Zealand's Richie McCaw has been named IRB Player of the Year for 2010.

It is the second successive year McCaw has landed the award and the third time in total, having also been honoured in 2006.

It completed a hat-trick of awards for New Zealand, who were named Team of the Year, with Graham Henry unveiled as Coach of the Year for a record fourth time.


Williams have announced that GP2 champion Pastor Maldonado of Venezuela will replace Nico Hulkenberg for the 2011 season alongside Rubens Barrichello. The 25-year-old is expected to bring €10m in sponsorship.

"I will be looking to get some good results in return for the support my country has given me to help get me to this position," Maldonado said.

"I feel very privileged that Williams has selected me as one of their race drivers. It is a great way to end what has already been an amazing year for me."

INSPIRED by a 1-7 haul from Jamie Moriarty, Tralee CBS were crowned Kerry colleges' O'Sullivan Cup champions yesterday at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney.

Tralee led by four points at the break. This was stretched to nine, 1-8 to 0-2, early in the second half when Moriarty goaled, after good work by Sean Walsh, sealing victory.
