Torch bearers in sport tourism got their moment in the sun as 15 organisations and venues were selected as the inaugural recipients of the Shannon Group European Sport Tourism Awards at King John's Castle.

Among the categories was the Irish Independent-sponsored Sport Tourism Sponsorship of the Year Award, which went to Vodafone Ireland for its continued promotion of Triathlon Ireland.

Other winners included Westport, which took the European Sport Tourism Town of the year; MTB Park Ballyhoura, which took the European Sport Tourism Venue for its mountain bike trail; and Killary Gaelforce, which won the National Sport Tourism Innovation Award.

The Tour de Burren won the Regional Sport Tourism Event of the Year, and Cycle Against Suicide won the Charity Sport Tourism Event of the year award.
