Hockey: Spain strike clinches decider
Sutton Park 3
St Columba's 2
Leinster Senior Boys Final
Jack Spain's strike two minutes from time handed Sutton Park their first ever senior title in dramatic fashion at Belfield yesterday.
It ended the stern resistance of St Columba's who shipped plenty of pressure and survived the sin-binnings of Harry Morris and Ross Canning, before eventually being stung on the break.
The Rathfarnham school actually opened the scoring from a rare counter in the 28th minute, Thomas Gibbs nipping in at the near post.
But a Harry Spain drag-flick brought parity and Keith O'Hare's made it 2-1 at the interval in the north Dublin team's favour.
Canning levelled the scores after the break from his side's first penalty corner.
The game looked set for extra-time until Luke Byrne found Jack Spain raiding and he neatly switched the ball on to his reverse side and rolled it past Robbie Hollis.
In the Junior Cup final, Wesley proved too strong for Kilkenny as they claimed their third title in four years. Two goals in 45 seconds broke the Cats' hearts.
Ian Stuart got the first of his four goals before half-time and, while Jeremy Duncan pulled one back with a cracking reverse strike, the Wesley centre-forward banged in three more to complete a 6-1 win.
