Hockey: Sothern helps Pembroke to Indoor title

Reigning outdoor champions Pembroke Wanderers were kings of the boards yesterday as they added the National Mens Indoor Trophy to their collection of silverware.

They toppled battling Three Rock Rovers 5-2 in last night's final at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.

Alan Sothern brought his prolific outdoor form to the indoor version of the game with a couple of scores in the winning tally.

But Pembroke were by no means relying on Sothern exclusively, with defender Conor Harte even joining in the fun up front.

Rovers, led by 45-year-old Liam Canning, lost a preliminary game to YMCA in the morning and then scraped through their semi-final with Glenanne after a penalty shoot-out.

Then they ran into a Pembroke side that had clearly learned a few lessons from their 6-0 drubbing by the same opposition during the qualifying phase of the event.

Peter Blakeney gave Three Rock the early edge in the final but after Ronan Gormley and Michael O'Connor replied, Pembroke were never in arrears thereafter.
