Hockey: Smyth on double to sink Ireland

THE Irish women's team were given a worrying indication of the task ahead in next week's Champions Challenge as they lost 3-0 to Australia at Belfield yesterday.

The Aussies went ahead through neat strikes from Emily Smyth either side of the break and then a thunderous effort from the towering Jodie Schulz from a penalty corner put the visitors out of sight.

The action starts in earnest on Saturday when Ireland meet South Africa in their opening game.

Meanwhile, UCD beat Leinster champions Glenanne 5-2 at Belfield, while Fingal scored three times in the last six minutes to beat Avoca 3-2.
