Hockey: O'Donoghue to miss Cup final

David Medcalf

Star forward Shane O'Donoghue will miss the Neville Cup final on Monday as UCD go in search of their first ever senior men's title.

The striker will be in South Africa attending a family wedding while his team-mates contest the St Stephen's Day showcase game with Railway Union.

Also absent will be O'Donoghue's father and coach Rory, who has handed direction of the college side over to Peter Chadwick and Alan Dobson for the occasion.

Despite the absence of O'Donoghue, Railway will not underestimate UCD, who accounted for Glenanne on their way to the final.

Luke Chadwick and Nick Burns are both members of the university's elite athlete academy, while David Watkins and Rob Anderson are forwards of note.

Defender Kenny Carroll is Railway's best-known player, while Rob Abbott and brothers Peter and Mark English have been leading the goal charge on the way to a top-five spot in the league.
