Hockey: Bruton leaves scoring to YMCA team-mates

David Medcalf

A bonus-point 4-0 win for YMCA over Pembroke Wanderers has all but assured them their place in the Irish League play-offs.

YMCA welcomed back Johnny Bruton, fresh from featuring in Ireland's 2-1 victory against European champions Germany during the week, but he left the scoring to Marcus Richardson, Ian McHugh, Richie Pedreschi and Phil Powderley as the team caught Pembroke cold at Milltown.

The outcome put the winners four points clear of the chasing pack with one game to play in Pool B, with leaders Lisnagarvey already assured of their play-off spot.

Pool A is headed by unbeaten Cookstown, who thrashed Cork Harlequins 5-0 on Leeside.

They will be joined in the play-offs by Banbridge unless injury-hampered Monkstown can overtake them in next weekend's closing pool match.

In the women's competition, title-holders Pegasus are being hotly pursued by UCD, while Hermes, Loreto and Railway Union are all well placed to progress.
