Hockey: Big freeze holding back Dible's YMCA top cats

David Medcalf HOCKEY

These are exciting times for fast-improving YMCA -- if only the winter weather would relent and allow them to play.

Last weekend, the snow put paid to their Irish League fixture against Belfast Instonians. And their Leinster League game against Glenanne, scheduled for Tallaght tomorrow, is in serious doubt. If the match goes ahead, then they will take the field against the league favourites as table-toppers.

Meanwhile, they have landed themselves a glamour Irish Senior Cup tie against Lisnagarvey.

At least the cup game is not due to take place until the New Year, so there is a good chance that the frost will have lifted. Being drawn against the Ulster aristocrats brings back memories of YMCA's last cup win -- all the way back in 1979.

"It's all up in the air," said YMCA manager John Dible as he looked for some sign of a thaw. "The lads are ready and good to go, whether the match against Glenanne goes ahead or not."

However, he admitted that the chances of play are poor.
