Hockey: Better late than never

John Greene

All's well that ends well. The only Olympic qualification tournament being staged in Ireland got under way yesterday in UCD, and there was good news beforehand for the event's hosts, the Irish Hockey Association.

Having been left in the lurch for several months by Fáilte Ireland, common sense prevailed. The tourism agency invested €15,000 in the event and you have to think this is money well spent.

It is a very high-profile event featuring six countries -- Ireland, Russia, Korea, Ukraine, Chile and Malaysia. It is a big deal for the visiting countries all this week -- Malaysia are giving it huge coverage -- and is a great opportunity to showcase Ireland abroad. Money well spent indeed.
