Hockey: Annadale to test Rovers' mettle

David Medcalf

The progress of Three Rock Rovers' youth policy will be tested to the full at the weekend as the club returns to the elite Irish Hockey League (IHL) after a year in exile.

The Dubliners head north on Saturday for a meeting with Annadale in Carryduff, where YMCA met their match in the cup seven days previously.

Three Rock coach Arul Anthoni has six teenagers in his squad and high hopes that the team will challenge for major honours in the future.

His present difficulties include a worrying injury list, with young brothers Shane and Luke Madeley among those facing fitness tests.

Definitely out of the Rovers side for the trip to Belfast is midfielder Ali Haughton, who will be absent for several months after suffering a muscle tear.

At least Anthoni will be able to call on the experience of Alan Bothwell, Garry Ringwood and Peter McConnell, who have all clocked up more than 10 seasons of senior hockey.

In the same IHL pool, YMCA are heading up the M1 again, this time bound for Hillsborough where Lisnagarvey have Irish striker Timmy Cockram back in action after a short break.

Another free-scoring forward will be in Dublin on Saturday as John Jermyn leads Cork C of I into action at Serpentine Avenue against Pembroke Wanderers.
