Hantuchova to face Sharapova for place in quarter-finals of Open GDF
Daniela Hantuchova will vie with top seed Maria Sharapova for a place in the quarter-finals of the Open GDF Suez after progressing past Marina Erakovic in Paris.
The Slovakian was heading towards a straight-sets victory over Erakovic when the world number 48 retired hurt with the scoreboard reading 6-3 3-0.
Hantuchova has, however, lost eight of her nine encounters with Russia's Sharapova, her solitary victory coming 10 years ago at Tokyo's Toray Pan Pacific Open.
Petra Kvitova is seeded second in the French capital and will meet home hopeful Alize Cornet in the next round following the Nice player's 6-3 5-7 6-2 win against Magdalena Rybarikova.
Karin Knapp beat Lara Arruabarrena 6-4 6-1 and will tackle third seed Sara Errani in the second round while a match against either Simona Halep or Kristina Mladenovic awaits Andrea Petkovic.
The German defeated Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6-2 6-3 at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin.
Yvonne Meusburger got the better of German qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam to clinched 7-5 6-1 victory in one hour and 23 minutes. The Austrian will next meet either eighth seed Kirsten Flipkens or reigning champion Mona Barthel.
The final first-round match of the day saw Carla Suarez Navarro beat Johanna Larsson 6-1 6-4 to set up a face-off with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
