Greyhounds: Whatsupjack provides all the answers

It was pure drama at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night when Whatsupjack staged a late rally to grab a last-stride victory in the final of the John J Casey Open 575.

This was a race packed with incident. The hotly fancied Deanridge Fury broke slowly but made progress to the bend where he crashed into Accordello and took a heavy fall. Whatsupjack led out of the second bend from early leader Three One Three with the rank outsider Hee Haws Montana now a close third.

A major upset looked likely when 16/1 outsider Hee Haws Montana edged ahead of Whatsupjack off the final bend. However, Whatsupjack had other ideas and he came back to hit the front in the shadow of the post for a short head verdict over Hee Haws Montana in 31.32. Three One Three was a length third and Accordello ran on extremely well to come fourth.

Whatsupjack is a son of Brett Lee and Miggs and is trained by Peter Cronin in Waterford for Crumlin publican Larry O'Shea.

The heats of the Joe Dunne Memorial were also run on the same programme and there were some top class performances.

Fastest was Barefoot Bullet as he led home a Paul Hennessy one- two-three from Budgie Burglar and Priceless Chef in 28.53 while Pat Gordon's Fatboyz Tyson was also impressive when beating Boher Master by three lengths in 28.60. Pablo Supreme in 28.77 and Dockland Sam in 28.93 also won.
