Saturdays at Shelbourne Park are famed for their quality of racing and the trend is being well maintained after a slow, weather-affected start to 2011.
Tonight is another splendid example, with the final of the Joe Dunne Memorial Puppy Stake the major attraction -- as well as a €10,000 Pick 6 Jackpot.
The presence of Pa Fitzgerald's Puppy Derby winner Melodys Royal guarantees the quality of the contest, but it is by no means a foregone conclusion as Ron Graffin's Mutual Decision is a real prospect, while Big Bam, Hats My Diamond, Leap Of Faith and Black Cyclone have shown flashes of inspiration.
There is concern over the trap six draw for Melodys Royal due to the incidence of occupants failing to get away on terms. However, Melodys is a confirmed wide runner and his overall pace can carry him to victory from the very progressive Mutual Decision.
You don't expect to find top trackers Mesedo Blue and Beaming Dilemma in an A1 competition and they look banker material in the heats of the Swords Prince @ Stud Stake. Mesedo Blue's kennel companion Tolerton Crasher looks another winner on the card, while others to appeal are Ballymac Tipp and St Mullins Pride.
The other feature final this evening is the Vetsearch International Kennedy Cup at Limerick, where the Pat Guilfoyle-trained Joey Jojo Junior will go off a very strong favourite. He has the winning of it, but he must come away smartly and win the race to the bend from Ballymac Lefanta. Bua Dearg also warrants consideration.
The semi-finals of the Guinness Trophy will be run at Curraheen Park this evening and the inside draw should swing the opening heat for Mumhan Aris, while Gogetemclaire may just edge out Paid Paddy in the other.
Tomorrow's final of the Alfie McLean Open 550 at Lifford looks a straight fight between Slippery Dave and Monleek Bay, though Dundee Dan may have other ideas.
