Greyhounds: Favourites on the mark

the favourites were on the mark in the two big weekend finals as Melodys Royal captured the Joe Dunne Memorial Puppy Stake at Shelbourne while Joey Jojo Junior came out tops in the Vetsearch International Kennedy Cup decider at Limerick.

The Pa Fitzgerald-trained Melodys Royal gave a power-packed display in a style which suggests he will be even happier over the Derby 550-yards distance.

Melodys Royal flew up the outside to track Mutual Decision and win by four lengths from Mutual Decision in 28.63 with Leap Of Faith third.

Down at Limerick Joey Jojo Junior ran out a very convincing winner but such did not appear likely approaching the first bend as he disputed third place.

Air Force Hawk drifted slightly off the inside rail and the Pat Guilfoyle-trained Joey Jojo Junior dived through the gap. Joey led on the second bend and quickly shot into a clear lead. He had three and a half lengths to spare at the line in 28.54 with Air Force Hawk second and then Ballyhannon in third.

Guilfoyle completed a treble on the night with Ms Deltafire and Magical Ozzie also on the mark for the Cloughjordan kennels.

Meanwhile, Oakfront Aga was the fastest qualifier for the Guinness Trophy final at Curraheen Park in 28.84. The other heat went to He Told Ted as he won in 29.47.
