Greyhounds: Big mike tops derby list

The Irish Greyhound Derby will get off to a flying start tomorrow night at Shelbourne Park with a number of the leading fancies for the classic in action in the first session.

A total of 144 went into the draw, with a half a dozen reserves as cover. There will be eight heats taking place tomorrow, Friday and Saturday night.

Sponsors Ladbrokes have made Tyrur Big Mike their 16/1 favourite and he will be in action in Heat 5 on the opening night, when he will be opposed by last year's English Derby winner, Kinda Ready.

PJ Fahy's Tyrur Big Mike was second in the Champion Stakes final in his last outing, where the winner was Makeshift.

Dolores Ruth's dog will be a runner in Heat 2 and will have last year's Oaks winner -- and this year's runner-up -- Skywalker Queen as a rival.

The Czech Republic tracker Fenomen Co Co will make his Irish debut in Heat 19 on Saturday.

Four will qualify from each heat for the second round, which will be run next Thursday and Saturday week.
