Floyd Mayweather Jr has defended Ray Rice, the NFL player whose Baltimore Ravens contract was terminated after footage emerged of him knocking his wife and then-fiancée unconscious.

Rice is seen to strike Janay Palmer in the face on 15 February this year at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. Palmer retaliates, before Rice hits her a second time in the face, knocking her unconscious.

“I think there's a lot worse things that go on in other people's households, also,” Mayweather said. “It's just not caught on video, if that's safe to say.”

Rice married Palmer in March, a month after the incident. Palmer has since defended her husband’s actions on Instagram, describing coverage of the incident as “horrific”.

Mayweather – who is currently facing domestic abuse charges from his former fiancée – said that the NFL should not have fired the sportsman, but stuck to their original punishment of suspending him for two games.

“Whether they saw the tape or not, I truly believe a person should stick to their word,” said Mayweather. “If you tell me you're going to do something, do what you say you're going to do. But once again, I'm not in the NFL, so I can't really speak on the situation.”

Mayweather’s 29-year-old ex-fiancée, Shantel Jackson, also claims that he invaded her privacy and humiliated her by sharing a picture of an ultrasound scan online and claiming that the couple broke up because she aborted their twin babies.

He says that her allegations are false, claiming that there is no physical evidence.

“Like I've said in the past, no bumps, no bruises, no nothing,” Mayweather said. “With O.J. and Nicole, you seen pictures. With Chris Brown and Rihanna, you seen pictures. With (Chad) Ochocinco and Evelyn, you seen pictures.

“You guys have yet to see any pictures of a battered woman, a woman who says she was kicked and beaten[by me]. So I just live my life and try to stay positive, and try to become a better person each and every day.”

The boxer is accused of beating, blackmailing, imprisoning and stealing from Shantel Jackson. The 29-year-old model alleged that he invaded her privacy and humiliated her by sharing a picture of an ultrasound scan online and claiming that the couple broke up because she aborted their twin babies.

She also alleged that he threatened to post naked pictures of her if she didn’t remove a photograph of her with rapper Nelly at a basketball game in April.

In court documents, she claims her former partner committed “outrageous acts” which caused her “pain and humiliation”. He allegedly subjected her to physical and verbal abuse, including an alleged incident during which he held her at gun point and threatened to shoot her. He is also accused of swearing at Jackson, telling her ‘You’re not s**t without me.”
