Fitzmaurice, Malone shine for hosts

This is a busy weekend for Athletics Ireland officials, who will be attending events in the Phoenix Park, Templemore and Tullamore.

On Saturday the Juvenile U-9, 10 and 11 Team Competitions take place in Templemore, while on Sunday there are two competitions -- the International Race Walking Grand Prix Event in the Phoenix Park, where some of Ireland's top race walkers like Robert Heffernan and Olive Loughnane will be in action, and the National Junior & U-23 Track & Field Championships which take place in Tullamore.

Elsewhere, Enniscorthy is the venue on Sunday for the annual Strawberry Half-Marathon and 5-Mile Run. The Half-Marathon starts at 10.0, with the 5-Mile event scheduled for 11.0. Information on www.strawberryhalfmarathon.com

David Fitzmaurice and Ailish Malone made it a memorable night for the host club when they won the men's and women's events in the annual Clonliffe 2-Mile Road Race from Finglas to Glasnevin last Wednesday.

Fitzmaurice finished strongly to win the men's race in 9.04 -- 10 seconds clear of Vinny Mulvey of Raheny Shamrocks AC, with another Clonliffe Harrier, Gary O'Hanlon, third.

The Clonliffe 125 Celebrations continue next month with the club's Track & Field Grand Prix at the Morton Stadium on Friday evening, July 8. The highlight of the meeting should be the Morton Mile, where a top-class field has been assembled. Updates on this event at www.clonliffeharriers.com
