Fitzgibbon lands 'b' gold

YOUTH OLYMPICS: New Ross swimmer Luke Fitzgibbon (Good Counsel) was Ireland's best performer on the opening day of the European Youth Olympics in Trabzon,Turkey.

Fitzgibbon narrowly missed out on a place in the 200m backstroke final but took gold in the 'B' final.

Greg O'Shea (Crescent, Limerick), third in his heat in 10.95, reached the 100m semi-finals.

Macroom's Grainne Moynihan ran a 55.31 personal best but missed the 400m by just one place.

Mary-Kate McDowell (Bangor) finished third in her 400m freestyle heat.

Brian O'Sullivan (NAC Abbotstown) swam a PB in 100m freestyle and Clodagh Flood (Tallaght) finished 16th in the 100m butterfly.

Ireland have a squad of over 50 athletes in five sports at this mini-Olympics, which has attracted 4,000 athletes from 49 countries.
