Ireland's Fionnuala Britton has won a gold medal at the Spar European Cross-Country Championships in Velenje, Slovenia this afternoon.

The 27-year-old Kilcoole Olympian had an easy victory in the senior women's race, pulling clear of her competitors with several laps to go.

"I can hardly believe it. That was the plan [to make the running] from that start and I knew I had to it. After last year, this is the only medal I wanted. In a ways, it's been on my mind for the whole year," Britton said after the race.

It was Ireland's first senior medal in 17 years in Europe's top cross-country prize. Catherina McKiernan won gold at the inaugural event in 1994.
