Equestrian: Twomey seals Irish victory

BILLY TWOMEY sealed victory for Ireland by beating Australia's Chris Chugg in a jump-off at the FEI Nations Cup in Lummen, Belgium.

Although not a Super League event, the fixture attracted 13 crack teams, many preparing for the premier Meydan series, which begins in La Baule, France, in a fortnight.

The Irish were on song from the outset, with Denis Lynch (Abbervail van Het Dingeshof), Shane Breen (Carmena Z) and Twomey (Tinka's Serenade) never putting a foot wrong.

With just three riders from each team back for the second round, young Mayoman Alex Duffy, who picked up 22 first-round faults with Tampa, sat it out. And when Ireland and Australia were still tied on a clean slate, it went into a third-round two-man showdown.

Chugg, on the fabulous Australian-bred Vivant, hit the second fence in the race against the clock and, although his time of 32.12 seconds was fast, he left the door ajar for Twomey, who took four seconds longer to go clear.
