Equestrian: Irish 'worlds' squad named

The Irish eventing squad has been named for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), which kicks off in Kentucky in three weeks' time, writes LOUISE PARKES.

Mark Kyle (Step in Time), Elizabeth Power (Kilpatrick River), Camilla Spiers (Portersize Just a Jiff), Sam Watson (Horseware Bushman) and Michael and Patricia Ryan (Ballylynch Adventure and Fernhill Clover Mist) take up the six places in eventing High Performance Manager Ginny Elliot's squad.

Jayne Doherty (The Only One) and Capt Geoff Curran (The Jump Jet) are named as reserves.

Curran and Power join Sarah Wardell and Louise Lyons at Burghley Horse Trials in England this weekend.

Show jumping team manager Robert Splaine has still not confirmed the final two in his side for the WEG, but the three already chosen -- Cian O'Connor, Denis Lynch and Billy Twomey -- compete at the 5-Star fixture at Gijon in Spain this weekend.

And O'Connor, who this week announced his engagement to girlfriend Ruth Maybin, lines out in today's non-superleague Nations Cup at the Spanish fixture alongside Dermott Lennon, Shane Breen and Capt David O'Brien.

Meanwhile, Trevor Breen, Nicola FitzGibbon, Dave Quigley and Shane Sweetnam, have flown out to Calgary for next week's Spruce Meadows Masters.

Sweetnam had a win and Darragh Kenny scored a double at the Hampton Classics in New York State this week.
