Equestrian: Irish claim team glory and individual silver
Ireland claimed team gold and individual silver for the second year in a row at the FEI Junior European Eventing Championships in Bishop Burton, Yorkshire yesterday. Galway 17-year-old, Cathal Daniels, a member of last year's winning side, finished just over a point behind British gold medallist Anna Wilks in the individual rankings, and the team reigned supreme when producing four spectacular clears in yesterday's final showjumping phase.
There were only seven time faults from Susie Berry (Carsonstown Athens) and one from Daniels (Rioghan Rua) to add to the scoreline when Nessa Briody (Tomboy) went clear over Saturday's cross-country course. Daniels' clear clinched it for the team and secured individual silver for the young rider.
At Millstreet CSI 3-Star International in Cork yesterday, Thurles-born Thomas Ryan (29) topped a great week for home runners with victory, riding Quite Zero, in the 1.55m Grand Prix.
He produced the only double-clear of the competition on his way to victory.
