Equestrian: Final round clear crowns superb week for Breen in Germany

Shane Breen finished joint-runner-up in the Leading Rider rankings at the prestigious CHIO in Aachen, Germany, continuing his superb week.

The Tipperary man had enjoyed some good results before securing victory in Saturday's Hunting Competition with Ominerale Courcelle and taking third in the Winning Round Challenge partnering Cos I Can.

Yesterday he finished ninth in the Grand Prix, the first leg of the new Rolex Grand Slam series won by Britain's Nick Skelton. From 39 starters only six went clear in the first round but both Irish entrants, Breen with Balloon and Billy Twomey with Tinka's Serenade carrying four faults each, qualified for the top-18 that made the cut into the second round.

Breen produced a clear to finish ninth and collected €10,000.

Dermott Lennon returned to form with two excellent rounds with Loughview Lou-Lou in Thursday's Nations Cup and a second in Saturday's Accumulator with Hallmark Elite and fifth with Newmarket Venture Clover in the Hunting class.

At Spruce Meadows, Conor Swail topped Friday's line-up with Game Ready, while Shane Sweetnam steered Fineman to victory in Saturday's Derby.
