Equestrian: Cool Lynch secures Riders Tour crown

Denis Lynch won the prestigious DKB Riders Tour when finishing third in the Grand Prix at the final leg in Munich, Germany, while Corkman Billy Twomey finished fifth in the World Cup qualifier in Verona, Italy, on a good day for Irish show jumpers yesterday.

The best five results from the six-leg Riders Tour series decide the winner, and victory for Lynch at the second round in Wiesbaden and runner-up spot at the third leg in Balve left him at the top of the leaderboard going into yesterday's final event.

Last into the 10-horse jump-off, he had to be clear and to finish in the top three if he was to take the title and he ticked both boxes when clearing the line in 40.69 seconds on Abbervail van het Dingeshoeve.

Germany's Marcus Ehning (Sandro Boy) pocketed the €25,000 winner's purse while Lynch earned €12,000 and was presented with a new €50,000 Taureg Jeep as series champion but the real value in this victory is the prestige.

Meanwhile, Twomey was the best of the Irish at the World Cup qualifier where Cian O'Connor went out with just a single mistake in the first round with Splendor and Jessica Kuerten missed the cut into the jump-off when Castle Forbes Cosman left two on the floor.
