Equestrian: Broderick claims prestigious Belgian honours
Tipperary's Greg Broderick and the five-year-old mare Arraghbeg Clover produced a stunning victory for the Irish Sport Horse Studbook at the World Breeding Championships at Lanaken in Belgium, WRITES LOUISE PARKES.
The event brings together the top breeders, riders and young horses from all the leading Studbooks around the world, and success in the three age categories is highly prized. From a startlist of 242 horses, 63 qualified for yesterday's 5-Year-Old final in which 25 went through to a jump-off.
Broderick and the mare snatched the win in 39.72 seconds. Bertram Allen partnered Castlefield Denver to second.
Meanwhile, Britain's Oliver Townend was chasing the €50,000 Goresbridge Go for Gold bonus if he could repeat victory in the CCI 3-Star at Ballindenisk Horse Trials but a cross-country fall with his first horse and a stop with his second proved costly. Joseph Murphy won the CCI 3-Star title with Sportsfield Othello, while Sam Watson was first and third in CCI 2-Star on Imperial Sky and Horseware Lukeswell.
