duke special leona

A WONDERFUL surprise awaited Leona Maguire after the final hole of her Atlantic Coast Conference showdown with Virginia's Briana Mao; the gifted Cavan youngster was thrilled to learn she'd finished all-square, then beat Mao on the second tie hole.

"It is pretty much as dramatic as it gets," said Maguire, the top-raked player on the US collegiate circuit in a spectacular first season with Duke University which now features a second sudden death win in four weeks.

"Me and Briana had a great battle all day," she added. "I honestly thought I was one behind playing the last. I guess I calculated it a little bit wrong and only realised coming off the green that I was in a playoff," explained Maguire, whose final round of two-under 70 left her at 10-under for 54 holes at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.

Maguire and twin sister Lisa are on golf scholarship after receiving top marks in last summer's Leaving Cert. Lisa tied-50th after three rounds of 78.
