Doran pace proves too hot to handle

JAMES DORAN made the long trip from Castleisland in Kerry to Achill Island a worthwhile journey on Saturday when he came home a clear winner in the annual Achill Half Marathon.

Doran raced into an early lead and came home in 1:14.06.

It was his first time to compete in this popular event which had an entry of almost 1,200.

"I went into the lead after the first mile and I am delighted to have won this event at my first attempt," Doran said. "It was a pretty long trip from Kerry to here, but it was well worth it."

Roger Barrett from Ballina AC came home in second place in 1:17.00 -- the same position that he filled in last year's race.

Mark Birmingham from Clonliffe Harriers finished third in 1:20.04.

Fionnuala Doherty of Clonliffe Harriers led the women's field home in 1:28.42, well clear of Charlotte Banks (Unattached). Tara Whyte of Clonliffe Harriers finished third in 1:32.21.
