Dog chat: Twirl grabs Oaks glory

Droopys Twirl snatched victory in the Sporting Press Irish Oaks at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night with a finishing burst that robbed favourite Mozzletoff of what looked certain glory in the last stride.

It was an incredible race as Droopys Twirl found herself six lengths adrift of Mozzletoff after a second-bend clip with Cool It Baby. The result looked assured as Mozzletoff raced clear down the back straight but then, approaching the third bend, the gap began to shorten.

Closing with every stride, Droopys Twirl still had a mountain to climb turning for home but she got there.

There was an anxious wait before the judge announced that Droopys Twirl had grabbed victory by a short head in 28.42, with Maggies Whistle three lengths adrift in third.

The winner is trained in Blarney by John Linehan for Cork-based Kieran Ryan and the plan now is to take on the dogs in the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby.

There was an upset at Drumbo where Leeview Jet missed the kick at the start of the Bettor.com Northern Irish Derby and was always fighting a losing battle.

There was no such problem for the Francie O'Brien-trained Loughview Gem as he ran out a three-length winner from Star Head in 29.56.

The semi-finals of the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger were run at Limerick and the winners were Michael O'Donovan's Judicial Academy in 29.56 and Maura Casey's Varra Captain (29.76).
