Dog chat: Outsider 'Bay' has Champion value for punters

WE've all heard of open races but Saturday's final of the Town View Foods Champion Stakes takes the biscuit. Four finalists are best priced between 3/1 and 4/1, while the field is completed by 6/1 and 14/1 chances.

The ironic element is that 6/1 chance Mesedo Blue was fastest to the bend in the semis and boasts the best first-split time. The 14/1 outsider Sevenheads Bay is a noted early pacer that is running from his favoured inside box and is outstanding value at such a price.

Visually, the most impressive in the semis was Tyrur Big Mike as he produced stunning pace from half-way on the run up to the third bend. In that time he opened a six-length lead. He then lost ground as he drifted very wide in his usual manner off the final bend.

The Dolores Ruth-trained Makeshift was outpaced early by Mesedo Blue but then produced a big run down the back to take over and he then held Mesedo by three parts of a length in the fastest time of the round.

Farley Blitz won the other heat in 29.97 from Fatboyz Tyson and on that running has a little to find on the clock. But he is capable of finding that time as he has previously won in 29.79, while Tyson has a 29.70 to his credit.

This really is a race to savour and the best advice to all serious greyhound enthusiasts is to book your place at Shelbourne Park next Saturday. Incidentally, the best prices on offer are: 3/1 Farley Blitz, Makeshift; 7/2 Tyrur Big Mike; 4/1 Fatboyz Tyson; 6/1 Mesedo Blue; 14/1 Sevenheads Bay.

Meanwhile, the semi-finals of the Thurles Fresh Milk Tipperary Cup will be run at Thurles on Saturday and this looks like producing a very exciting climax. Last year's winner Chicken Supper got a back-door reprieve in the quarter-finals at the weekend when getting in as a reserve and he grabbed his chance to finish second behind Carib King.

He has been rewarded with an ideal trap one draw in the second semi, where his main rivals will be Hurry On Black, Leeview Jet and Forest Rover. Fastest in the heats was Scart Legend and he will be faced by two other heat winners, Carib King and Lemon Jet, in the opening qualifier.
