Dog chat: Injury ends careers of two Tyrur Derby stars
The track has seen the last of two of its great stars with the news yesterday that the brilliant Tyrur litter brothers McGuigan and Big Mike have been retired.
Owner PJ Fahy reported that last year's Derby final 1-2 both suffered further injury problems as they lost out in this year's quarter- finals last Saturday.
"McGuigan has two broken metacarpals while Big Mike has a sprained wrist and both have been retired," Fahy said.
The two dogs thrilled the Shelbourne crowds last September when battling out that fantastic finish to the decider and they were fancied by many to progress to this year's final, despite their injury problems.
The overall Derby picture has changed dramatically following Saturday's action where so many of the leading fancies made their exit.
Two of Dolores Ruth's five contenders survived and she reports that Razldazl George and Razldazl Bugatti both came out of their races in good condition.
Sponsors Ladbrokes now make George their 2/1 favourite, while Bugatti is a 5/1 joint second favourite with Rockchase Bullet.
Punters will tread somewhat warily with 12 inside seeds contesting the semi-finals and this could result in plenty of early crowding in the early stages.
Peter Cronin also has two dogs through to the semis, Hey Gringo and Rockview Head. They have been drawn together in the first heat, where the market will be dominated by Razldazl George, Rockchase Bullet and Droopys Twirl.
Razldazl Bugatti will be the favourite for the second semi-final in which he looks sure to go clear early and then it will be a case of whether he lasts home with a host of strong finishers in opposition.
One of these will be sprightly veteran Krug Ninety Five as he bids to reach a third Derby final.
