Dockrell back to boost Lightning
The appearance of George Dockrell in the Leinster Lightning team for today's Newstalk inter-provincial opener against North West Warriors at The Hills (10.45) has raised the stakes in the hosts' bid to go one better than last year.
With the three-day Championship and Twenty20 trophies comfortably won, the Lightning side were expected to complete the treble in the 50-over Cup competition on the final day of last season.
But the Warriors, who had failed to win any of their first 11 games, produced the shock of the season to complete an emphatic 71-run victory and hand that title to the Northern Knights.
Nine of the Warriors side have the chance to repeat that win today and with all-rounder Johnny Thompson, who hit 95 not out for Brigade on the opening day of the season, and first-choice wicket-keeper Ricky-Lee Dougherty the two additions, it is a stronger team than won at Strabane.
But while the Warriors can boast only three Ireland internationals, with a total of 26 caps, the inter-pro debut of Dockrell and the return of John Mooney, who both missed last season's finale, adds 261 caps to the formidable Lightning side which, even with the withdrawal of Alex Cusack – with a niggle – includes nine internationals.
Dockrell's inclusion in the squad is due to being out of favour with Somerset, so he will be keen to turn his left arm over ahead of the two one-day internationals against Sri Lanka at Clontarf next week.
Max Sorensen and Andrew Poynter, plus Warriors captain Andy McBrine and Stuart Thompson, are the other Ireland players in action today.
There are no Leinster League Division 1 fixtures today.
