Grand National record: As a jockey, Hughes never got as far as Becher's Brook, which is the sixth fence, in four attempts. In 1977, he rode Davy Lad, having won the Gold Cup on the horse a month earlier, but the partnership came to grief at the third fence, a big ditch. Black Apalachi has been Hughes's only runner in the race as a trainer up to now. He fell at the second two years ago and unseated Denis O'Regan while still in front at Becher's Brook on the second circuit in 2009.
