Derval O'Rourke's season over
Best efforts of Bayern Munich doctor can't save her season
NOT even several visits to world-renowned Bayern Munich doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt could save Derval O'Rourke's season.
The Leevale star has revealed that she went to Germany last week to visit the sports medic to try to solve the Achilles and heel problem that has dogged her summer and forced her out of next month's World Championships in Moscow.
Muller-Wohlfahrt, known as 'Healing Hans,' is possibly the most famous sports injury specialist in the world. He cured Michael Owen's hamstring problems when he was at the top of his game and helped Jose Maria Olazabal recover from arthritis to win the Masters in 1999.
In the athletics world he has worked on superstars like Paula Radcliffe and Usain Bolt and has even reportedly treated Irish rock star Bono for a back problem.
"I have been seeing Dr Muller-Wohlfahrt since 2007 and he has always provided me with great care and a lot of his time," O'Rourke revealed.
"I was out with him in April and again last week but, unfortunately, I have run out of time ahead of the World Championships and just have to remain patient."
Muller-Wohlfahrt (left) believes that a twice-torn calf muscle has left scar tissue that is causing the problem that flared up badly last month and left O'Rourke unable to hurdle without great pain.
The two-time European silver medallist and former world indoor champion is particularly frustrated because this is the first summer since 2001 that she has missed a major championship, a remarkable record that stretches back to the Europeans in Munich in 2002.
