Despite retiring from international athletics last year, former world champion hurdler Derval O’Rourke has said that she plans to stay fit throughout her pregnancy.
The 33-year-old recently revealed that she is five months pregnant with her first child and the Cork native said that she is practising pregnancy pilates ahead of her due date in August.
She married fellow Olympian Peter O’Leary in 2013, after meeting on a return flight from the 2008 Olympic World Games in Beijing.
Speaking to the Independent.ie, the athlete who holds four European medals, said she has been “staying fit” by lifting some light weights and pilates.
“For me, where I am coming from, if I did nothing it would probably be a bit of a disaster, I have always been fit,” she said today.
“I have been really fortunate in that my body just seems quite happy to stay fit. I actually feel really good.”
Derval has been unveiled as an ambassador for the ‘First 1000 Days’ campaign, joining chef Neven Maguire and RTE’s Maura Derrane.
She said that she is very excited about becoming a parent in August and has yet to find out if she is expecting a boy or a girl.
She announced her pregnancy on Twitter on Mothers Day.
“I keep saying I want to find out, but every time I have a scan, I don’t,” she added.
“Joining the ‘First 1000 Days’ was a no brainer for me. I thought everyone knew I was pregnant, like obviously people have known for a while and I was working for RTE recently and they all knew, so I just kind of thought that people knew.
“The reaction has been lovely, people are very sweet.”
