Irish cyclist Sam Bennett won today’s first stage of the Tour of Turkey.

The ace sprinter was first home at the end of the 157km first leg from Istanbul to Tekirdag.

He takes the leader’s yellow jersey after beating Fabio Jacbosen and Caleb Ewan in a bunch sprint.

This is Bennett’s eighth stage victory in this race in the last three years and his fourth sprint win of the season.

It makes the decision of his Bora-Hansgrohe team to leave Bennett out of their team for the Giro d’Italia next month all the more inexplicable.

Bennett won three stages in last year’s Giro and would have been licking his lips at the idea of racking up wins in a first week of the Italian race that features six stages likely to end in bunch sprints.
