A crash 40km from the finish saw Dan Martin plummet to a 23rd-place finish overall on the final stage of the Volta a Catalunya on a day which saw Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez triumph.

The UAE rider, who had maintained his fifth-place status on Saturday, finished 12 minutes behind stage winner Davide Formolo.

"A bike hit my leg, I got back up, but I couldn't pedal for two or three kilometres, so my race was virtually over." Martin said.

Lopez, who snatched the lead by winning an uphill finish at La Molina on the fourth stage on Thursday, held off his rivals in the final stage in Barcelona.

The stage was marred by a crash in a descent that took down Romain Bardet, forcing the AG2r-La Mondiale rider and Romain Barguil to abandon the race.
