Sam Bennett came agonisingly close to taking his second victory at the Vuelta a Espana yesterday when coming out the wrong side of a photo finish with Dutch sprinter Fabio Jakobsen of Deceuninck-Quick-Step at the end of stage four in El Puig.

Having taken victory on stage three, the Irish national champion looked set for back-to-back wins until he took the long way around the final roundabout and dropped a few places just before the sprint began and found himself boxed in.

"This one hurts a lot," said Bennett after the photo finish saw him lose out by millimetres. "But there was nothing else I could do."

Bennett can take some consolation from the fact that he now leads the points classification, while Nicolas Roche also retained the leader's jersey.
