Cycling: Cavendish bursts to dramatic stage victory

World champion Mark Cavendish took a nail-biting bunch sprint to the line in Cervere yesterday for his third stage victory of this year's Giro d'Italia.

Cavendish, who was boxed in with 200m to go, found a gap along the barriers and surged to the front with just 50m to go to win by a bike length from Norwegian Alexander Kristoff of Katusha and former team-mate, Aussie Mark Renshaw.

Irish duo Nicolas Roche and Philip Deignan dropped down the overall classification at the Tour of California after the stage-five time-trial, both losing over three and a half minutes to stage winner Dave Zabriskie (Garmin Barracuda).
