Italy's Diego Ulissi was awarded victory on stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia yesterday after compatriot Giovanni Visconti crossed the line first but was demoted to third for an irregular sprint manoeuvre.
As the two riders made their final dash for the line in Tirano, Visconti pushed Ulissi aside in a bid to squeeze between his rival and roadside barriers.
Race officials later announced that Visconti had been demoted, with Ulissi the winner and Spain's Pablo Lastras promoted to second.
Spain's Alberto Contador, of Saxo Bank-Sungard, who came in two minutes and 58 seconds behind, leads the general standings by four minutes and 58 seconds over Lampre's Michele Scarponi. Vincenzo Nibali of Liquigas is third, five minutes and 45 seconds adrift with four stages to go.
Philip Deignan, meanwhile, finished the stage in 89th place, five minutes 37 seconds behind the winner, and now jumps to 51st in the general standings.
