'Icon' Morgan to play on Irish soil
Eoin Morgan was confirmed as an 'icon player' for the Dublin Chiefs at yesterday's Euro Slam draft at Heathrow, with Pakistan stars Babar Azam and Mohammad Amir joining him at the new franchise when the tournament gets under way at the end of August.
The Dublin-born England World Cup-winning skipper is one of seven 'overseas' signings for the chiefs, while the Belfast Titans have legendary Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, and South African T20 specialists JP Duminy and Colin Ingram among their imports for the six-team event.
"I'm proud and delighted to participate in the inaugural Slam," Morgan said.
"You only have to look at the calibre of international and local stars who have been selected to see that it's going to be an electrifying tournament."
The local players drafted have been chosen on geographical lines, with Leinster Lightning stars Andy Balbirnie and Kevin O'Brien assigned to the Chiefs, while Paul Stirling and Gary Wilson were the top two Irish players signed by the Titans.
George Dockrell, Lorcan Tucker, Josh Little, Simi Singh, Tyrone Kane, Gareth Delany and Harry Tector complete the Chiefs squad for the tournament which also features two teams each from the Netherlands and Scotland and will be contested in Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Dublin.
