Cricket: Joyce produces superb innings
ED JOYCE top-scored with 99 not out as Ireland's batsmen made the United Arab Emirates toil on the first day of their InterContinental Cup clash in Sharjah.
Openers William Porterfield and Paul Stirling also made half-centuries to take Ireland to 272-2 after a surprise decision by the home side to bowl first on the most placid of pitches.
Joyce looked in good touch from the start of his 120-ball innings which brought him eight boundaries, including two sixes over mid-wicket.
The 34-year-old clearly wanted to reach his century before stumps and nearly paid the price when he mis-hit a pull and was badly dropped at square-leg on 92.
If he can find another single when Ireland resume the one-sided battle, Joyce will have his third Ireland century and his first since the World Cup qualifiers in 2005 – the year he began his six-year exile with England.
