Cricket: Irish losing grip on title

Ireland's grip on the Intercontinental Cup was further loosened in Dambulla yesterday as Afghanistan made a strong reply in this must-win qualifying clash, writes David Townsend.

The Afghans revelled in the Sri Lanka conditions to reach 263-3 in response to the three-times champions' 405.

The wickets fell to left-arm spinner Gary Kidd and seamers Peter Connell and Andre Botha.

Ireland's faint hopes of taking the points for a first-innings lead lies with the second new ball, due early this morning.

That Ireland were able to creep past 400 in the morning session was due to a spirited last-wicket stand of 66 between John Mooney, who made 58 not out, and Connell.
