Skibbereen-born siblings Paul and Gary O’Donovan took gold at the European Rowing Championships in Germany on a banner day for the Irish contingent.

The duo took first place with an outstanding display in A final of the lightweight double sculls. The brothers, who will represent Ireland at this summer’s Olympics, lopped off 2.5 seconds from their semi-final time to overtake initial leaders Norway amid blustering conditions

The paring have certainly hit form with the showcase in Rio fast approaching, having taken silver in World Cup Regatta in Italy last month.

Elsewhere, Sanita Puspure took third in the Women’s Single Sculls final.
