Clijsters exit after hip injury

TENNIS

Kim Clijsters suffered an injury scare yesterday -- just over a week before the defence of her Australian Open crown.

The Belgian retired midway through her semi-final against Daniela Hantuchova at the Brisbane International with a left hip injury.

Clijsters, who beat Li Na to claim the crown at Melbourne Park last year, won the opening set on a tie-break but was 3-1 down in the second, and withdrew after treatment.

Men's top seed Andy Murray showed no mercy to doubles partner Marcos Baghdatis as he cruised to a 6-2 6-2 quarter-final victory.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer pulled out of the Qatar Open because of a back injury yesterday but insisted his participation in the Australian Open was not under threat.
