Brazilian in a lather after medal gaffe

A Brazilian judoka who broke his Olympic bronze medal when he dropped it while taking a shower is now fighting to have it replaced.

Felipe Kitadai had vowed to take his medal everywhere he went after winning bronze in the men's 60kg category on Saturday.

But he soon regretted his decision when he dropped the medal while trying to keep it dry.

The part holding the ribbon lanyard broke, preventing him from wearing it, while the medal also suffered a small dent.

"I took it into the shower, but I was afraid to get it wet so put it in my mouth while I soaped myself. It ended up slipping," said Kitadai.

The International Olympic Committee is under no obligation to give Kitadai a replacement but it is now considering a formal request by the Brazilian Olympic Committee for a new medal. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
