Watch - Referee on the end of a huge left hook in last night's world title fight
James DeGale and Badou Jack fought out an epic world super-middleweight title fight in New York last night - and it wasn’t just the two fighters who were relieved to get through the bout without being knocked out.
Referee Arthur Mercante Jr felt the full force of a left hook from WBC world champion Jack, as he was on the receiving end of a thumping blow as he tried to separate the fighters at the end of round five.
The staggering official was propped up by a combination of Jack and the ropes before swigging a bottle of water as he recomposed himself following his unexpected blow.
He continued to officiate the fight through the twelve rounds, which finished in a dramatic and controversial draw after a scrap that saw both fighters were floored in a thrilling contest.
This is the moment Mercante Jr nearly suffered his own knock-out blow, as he showed much more fighting spirit that Premier League referee Paul Alcock after his famous clash with Paulo Di Canio back in 1998:
