Two Irish boxers have been nominated for prestigious awards by the British Boxing Board of Control.
atie Taylor, the current WBA and IBF lightweight World champion, is nominated for Overseas Boxer of the Year, while WBA World bantamweight title holder Ryan Burnett is in the running for Boxer of the Year.
Additionally, the Carl Frampton v Nonito Donaire clash has been nominated in the Fight of the Year category.
The winners will be officially announced at a gala function at the Royal Lancaster in London on September 28.
Seven boxers are in the running for Boxer of the Year. Apart from the unbeaten Burnett, the other fighters nominated are heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, who will be favourite to lift the gong, George Groves, Lewis Ritson, Billy Joe Saunders, Josh Taylor and Josh Warrington – who is due to meet Carl Frampton in a world title fight before the end of the year.
Katie Taylor is the only female boxer nominated in the Overseas Boxer of the Year category and looks ideally positioned to win the award. The other fighters in the running are Maurice Hooker, Viktor Postol and Emmanuel Rodriguez.
There are four fights nominated for Contest of the Year: Tommy Langford v Jason Welborn; Josh Warrington v Lee Selby, Dereck Chisora v Carlos Takam and the memorable showdown in Belfast between Carl Frampton and former four- weight World champion Nonito Donaire.
