Middleweight Michael O’Reilly is one step closer to securing a place at the Rio Olympics but Darren O’Neill has bowed out of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Baku.

O’Reilly, the number one seed and World championship bronze medallist, beat Vitalia Dandarendka from Belarus to advance to the next round.  The Irish champion has  to finish in the top five to secure a slot in the 75kg weight division in Rio.

However, there was no joy for O’Neill, who captained the Irish squad at the London Games. He was beaten by Wesley Apochi from Nigeria ending his dreams to making it to Rio.

Ireland’s remaining boxer in the tournament surper-heavyweight Dean Gardiner is in action tomorrow.
